Moves Like Chicken

painting from http://tasunkeluta.blogspot.com/

Every dancer has his or her own catalog of "moves," the different footwork and body positions you use throughout a song. For beginning dancers it may just be a double step trying to keep up with the beat but for top-notch competitors the list is long and varied.

Something an aspiring chicken dancer can and should do is make a list of your moves, the ones you know. Then identify some more (from youtube or other powwows) that you want to incorporate into your arsenal.

Our dance isn't choreographed because every song is different. However if you have a working knowledge of your go to moves, you can string them together into a cohesive dance.

When you're making your list, be creative with how you name your moves, this will help you not only keep track of them but also give you easy recall on the dance floor. The goal is not to think about what comes next but to just naturally transition from one movement to another as if it was all planned from the beginning. Here's what my list looks like:

Spencer's Short List of Chicken Moves

TJ Twist
Not Afraid Cross
Stride
Front Heel Skip
Grass Back Spin
Scratch
Left Right Strut
Gallop
Brown Bob
Charge
Upright Chad
Grass Front cross spin

With a modest list of moves you have endless combinations with which to wow the judges. Naming the moves is for your own benefit, there are no official names. I named my moves based on the action or the dancer that I drew the inspiration from.

If you've got an iTunes gift card burning a hole in your wallet, check out Young Spirit from Frog Lake Alberta. Their album It's All About the Drum is available in iTunes store.

And to close, here's a video with some neat and varied outfits (check out Robert Fish in a very understated red and white) and kudos to the little man for winning.
